Our opinion on Twin Saga and its gameplay
Straight out of the Aeria Games studios, Twin Saga is an MMORPG with a post-apocalyptic/fantasy atmosphere. It is a free-to-play game available for download. The storyline follows your avatar, the chosen one, in a world ravaged by the power of two very powerful sisters. The game’s design, very much inspired byJapanese animation, should be a hit with fans despite the slightly dated graphics.
Twin Saga offers a very dynamic gameplay. The combat system, in real time, requires the player to use his different abilities (placed in a skill bar) at the right moment. Classic, of course, but still effective and addictive. There are 10 different classes, each characterised by specific strengths and weaknesses. Each class has its own ultimate move, which the player can launch once the SP bar is full. To increase this gauge, simply multiply the basic abilities within a battle.
This means that you’ll have to frantically click on your abilities in order to get access to your devastating attack. The problem is that, while the classes are varied, they have limited skills. Furthermore, not all of them are available at the start of the game, and will only be accessible once you reach a certain level. So you’ll have to be patient and accept to click again and again on the same abilities. Fortunately, the speed of the attacks makes this more bearable. It is also possible to change class at any time, outside of combat. This allows you to try out all the possibilities of Twin Saga without having to create a dozen characters. The interface, during and outside of combat, is simple and clear.
Twin Saga, an MMORPG like so many others?
As you can see, Twin Saga has some excellent assets, but it also has to deal with some fairly pronounced flaws. The first is that it struggles to distinguish itself from the competition. Intensive farming, repetitive battles and tasteless quests are the order of the day, difficult pitfalls to avoid in MMORPGs. The main story is quite rich and offers a more interesting than average premise. But you’ll have to face repetitive dialogues to see the end of it.
That said, the game fromAeria Games adds an interesting component: the Astral Adventures. These quests, accessible from level 10 onwards, allow the player to “choose” how they will be carried out. Via cut-scenes reminiscent of certain visual novels, you will take part in the progress of the quest by selecting a specific axis. The possibility is attractive, even if we quickly realise that the player’s impact on these Astral Adventures remains very limited.
As a good free-to-play game, the software offers a cash shop in order to progress more quickly in the PvP ranking. However, qualifying Twin Saga as a pay to win game would be a mistake. Indeed, it is never mandatory to put your hand in the wallet. In spite of this, some features that make the salt of MMORPGs remain payable, such as the public chat. On the other hand, this may allow the community to remain fairly healthy and avoid trolls.
Our conclusion on Twin Saga
Twin Saga is the typical example of a good little MMORPG that you can easily fall in love with. Very accessible, easy to take in hand, nervous, its very classic gameplay proves to be efficient. Its graphics, although a bit outdated, remain cute and endearing. We regret that the game doesn’t go as far as it should, especially concerning the Astral Adventures.
