PvE – PvM

What is PvE – PvM?

PvE stands for “Player versus Environment”. It is almost present in every MMORPG that respects itself. It applies when the gamer fights against the environment directed by the server, materialising in particular through combat against enemies, quest resolutions or even the running of dungeons. PvE allows for single or multiplayer combat against monsters controlled by the PC. In French, the words PvE (player vs. environment) and PvP (player vs. player) are often used. For example, in World of Warcraft, PvE is the only way to gain experience. PvE/PvE is the opposite of PvP/PvP, where gamers fight against other players.

PvM comes from the English term “Player versus Monster”. This is when the gamer fights an enemy directed by the AI (artificial intelligence) of the title.

PvE in more detail

Nowadays, PvE is associated with two types of exploration:

Simple PvE: This refers to the totality of actions to be carried out in solo or with others, such as quests, the exploration of different zones and dungeons as well as levelling.

HL PvE: This corresponds to high level, and concerns the dungeons where you have to eliminate the bosses. As a general rule, PvE HL is carried out with several players (at least ten, but can go up to 40) and requires a strong team spirit, an excellent reactivity and of course time.

In Guild Wars II, PvE is the opposite of PvP, which pits gamers against each other. In this title, PvP content and PvE content are entirely separate. In addition, in PvE mode, a gamer can be eliminated by another player. As a rule, a PvE mode can be played solo, with human or AI companions. PvE can incorporate a story told as the gamer progresses. It can also have missions that can be done in any order. Very little present in survival horror. Thus, the game Guild Wars tells its story by revealing scenes cut from the game as well as dialogue with NPCs.

In order to maximize replayability, missions can be completed more than once. Characters in this mode are mostly protected from being killed by other gamers or having their inventories looted. This is not the case in the Eve Online title, where gamers can be ambushed by other human players, PvP, when they want to complete a quest. Some titles, such as the popular World of Warcraft, offer the gamer the choice to engage in open-world PvP combat or to participate in uninterrupted PvP quests through the use of specific servers and temporary gamer flags.
